Prayer and Temperament in Spiritual Direction

Join us as we launch the 2026-2027 year of the Listening Collective with a half-day HYBRID continuing education Listening Together workshop on "Prayer and Temperament in Spiritual Direction."

Based on the classic 1991 book by Chester P. Michael and Marie C. Norrisey, we will look at how the 4 temperament types in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (NF, NT, SP, SJ) offer a deeper understanding of the different spiritual practices that can assist in spiritual direction. No experience in Myers-Briggs is needed.

A brief overview will be provided with optional tests provided for those who are interested in discovering more.

Join us in-person or online on Tuesday, September 1st from 9:30-12 noon for a time of learning and listening together.

This half-day workshop expands the conversation earlier this year as the Listening Collective looked at the Enneagram as a map in spiritual direction and how understanding of personality assists us in listening deeply.

About the Leaders

Larry Jay

As the Executive Director of Rolling Ridge, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Jay works in partnership with the staff to ensure that the guest experience at the Ridge is top quality. He also partners with retreat leaders to provide excellent programming at the Ridge, and is available to speak about the ongoing ministry and historic mission of Rolling Ridge as a place of rest, retreat, and transformation. A trained spiritual director and ordained American Baptist pastor, Larry (as he is known by friends) is a graduate of UCLA, Golden Gate Seminary, Franciscan School of Theology, American Baptist Seminary of the West, and the Gateways to God Missional Spiritual Direction Program. He is also Adjunct Faculty at Merrimack College in the Masters of Spirituality and Spiritual Direction programs. Eco-spirituality is his passion (and was his doctoral dissertation), encouraging everyone to live into the fullness of our connection with our True Self, nature, God, and all people.
