Program Details

Advanced Missional Spiritual Direction Training
is a one year program with two tracks, each with specific course offerings and practicum. Track I focuses on a spiritual guidance approach within community and/or organizational contexts. Track II focuses on the training in supervision of spiritual directors.

Track I:  Missional Spiritual Direction in the Neighborhood
of the World

  • Spiritual Guidance Presence within the Neighborhood of the World
  • Spaces for Spirit within the Neighborhood of the World
  • Developing a Missional Spiritual Direction Discernment Model in Context
     

Track II:  Training in Supervision of Spiritual Directors

  • Companioning Emerging Spiritual Directors I
  • Companioning Emerging Spiritual Directors II
  • Developing a Missional Spiritual Direction Discernment Model in the Context of Supervision
     

What to expect:

  • A contemplative model of spiritual guidance in action
  • Participation in a learning community of peers, lay and clergy
  • Group instruction
  • Reading and home-based experiential learning in preparation for each retreat
  • Written work reflecting your learning and growth as a spiritual director in context
  • Participants are expected to be in spiritual direction

Tuition: 
$1,950 (paid in full) or $1,000 paid in two installments (payable on or before first and third session)
(Tuition covers training, single accommodations, and meals. Books, travel, and incidentals are not included in the tuition.)

For Commuters:
$1,460 (paid in full) or $750 paid in two installments  (payable on or before first and third session)
(Tuition covers training and 3 meals per day. Books, travel, and other incidentals are not included in the tuition.)

$100 non-refundable application fee is due with your application.  Participants are responsible for full tuition of the one year program.

Limited scholarships available.  Contact Beth Garnaas-Holmes, Gateways Director, for details.  United Methodist clergy under appointment are eligible for MEF grants.   CEU's available. Boston University School of Theology also has a process to provide credits for this program toward Certification in Spiritual Formation within the United Methodist Church

Requirements:
People applying for Track I and II need to have completed a spiritual direction training program.  Applicants for Track II also need to have provided spiritual direction for 3-5 years. All applicants should have an active, growing spiritual life; a deep love for all of God's people; ability to embrace diversity; strength in deep, purposeful listening; and the personal time needed for reflection and 3 training retreats.

Please write a 2-3 page essay responding to the application questions (found on the registration page) for either Track I or II.  These questions are designed to help you discern your sense of call and readiness for advanced training in missional spiritual direction.

Applications are due by January 15, 2019.  Space is limited, so early application is encouraged.  The next offering of Advanced Gateways is scheduled for 2020.
