Strap on your virtual walking shoes and embark on a pilgrimage to three sacred destinations: Israel, Japan, and France. No passport or tickets required. Simply watch the videos on your own, and then sign up for the corresponding communal discussions via Zoom. The three separate hour-long films are easily located for free on Youtube (see below), at your local library CD collection, or for a small fee on some TV Streaming services.

Using films produced by PBS Sacred Journeys with Bruce Feiler in 2014, this Summer Film Pilgrimage Series sponsored by Rolling Ridge will focus on only three of the original six films. You may choose to participate in as many of the three discussions about the films as you like. Program facilitator, Barb Bodengraven, will be our "tour guide" and lead each Zoom discussion on the wildly popular phenomenon of pilgrimage and help participants delve into the specifics of each of the films.

Discussion dates for the films will be spread across three Wednesdays this summer, June through August from 7 – 8:30 pm EST.

Wednesday, June 8, 2022 – Jerusalem ~ A sacred site for Christians, Jews and Muslims, Jerusalem is a pilgrimage destination for followers of all three religions. As film series host Bruce Feiler says, “religion lives in the stones” of Jerusalem. Virtually experience your own pilgrimage to the holy city as you follow in the footsteps of many who have gone before you. Wednesday, July 13, 2022 – Lourdes, France ~ This emotionally wrenching pilgrimage to the healing waters of Lourdes examines the motives of war veterans and their families as they explore how 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary 160 years ago can help them re-orient into “normal life. A word of caution: Some of the veterans outline their war-induced traumas and discuss suicide during short interview clips in this film. Prior to the discussion, click here to watch via YouTube.

Wednesday, August 10, 2022 – Shikoku, Japan ~This circular pilgrimage around a sacred Bhuddist trail of 88 temples ends where it begins – a metaphor for the pilgrim’s journey, if there ever was one. Searching for enlightenment and meaning, pilgrims in this film are from many countries and backgrounds. Along the way, all call upon spirits for clarity and healing. Cost: $30 per person for travel package deal
